![]() Word will ask you to give your new Toolbar a name and once you do, its name will appear in the list of Toolbars, and an empty Toolbar will appear. It’s called the Quick Access toolbar, and as the name suggests, it lets you quickly access some of Word’s features on your machine. An easier way to hide/show the Ribbon is to double-click on any tab. In Microsoft Word, the View menu gives a user the option to customize which toolbars are displayed. Other ribbons appear as necessary, for example this Picture Tools ribbon when an image is selected. ![]() To customize the Quick Access Toolbar, open or create an Excel, Word, or PowerPoint document. Word 2013 does introduce a new feature, however, allowing the Ribbon to be hidden entirely rather than just minimized (with the tabs still showing), and you are right that the control for this feature is pretty well hidden (if you hadn't described it, I probably wouldn't have found it and discovered the Auto-Hide setting).
